Gas geochemistry and CO2 output estimation of Milos Island (Greece)

Several gas samples have been collected from natural gas manifestations in the island of Milos. Most of them are located underwater along its coasts, whereas three anomalous degassing fumarolic areas (Kalamos, Paleochori and Adamas) were identified on land. Almost all the gases have CO2 as the prevailing gas species, with concentrations ranging from 88 to 99% for the samples taken underwater, while the on-land manifestations present a wider range (15-98%), being sometimes heavily contaminated by air. This study was aimed to test a new methodological approach to carry out measurements of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) diffusively emitted from soils in hydrothermal-volcanic environments. This method was based on the use of a static closed-chamber (SCC) in combination with a Lumex® RA-915M analyzer that provides GEM measurements in a wide range of concentrations (from 2 to 50,000 ng m-3). Gas samples were collected at fixed time intervals from the SCC positioned on the ground (time-series samples). Abstract There have been limited studies to date targeting gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) flux from soil emission in enriched volcanic substrates and its relation with CO 2 release and tectonic structures. In order to evaluate and understand the processes of soil–air exchanges involved at Solfatara of Pozzuoli volcano, the most active zone of Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy), an intensive field measurement survey has been achieved in September 2013 by using high-time resolution techniques. Methanotrophy in geothermal soils, an overlooked process: The example of Nisyros island (Greece)

Abstract A multidisciplinary field campaign was carried out at Nisyros Island (Greece). Hydrothermal gases were sampled and analysed, and CH4 and CO2 fluxes from the soils were measured with the accumulation chamber method. The sampling area (Lakki plain) covers an area of about 0.08 km2, and includes the main fumarolic areas of Kaminakia, Stefanos, Ramos, Lofos and Phlegeton. Flux values measured at 130 sites range from −3.4 to 1420 mg m−2 d−1 for CH4 and from 0.1 to 383 g m−2 d−1 for CO2.
